OUR MISSION.
Combating the problem of limited broadband service in parts of Allegany County, New York and to facilitate the last mile providers to utilize the wireless broadband system throughout the County.
In 2015 the Allegany County Board of Legislators established the Allegany County Telecommunications Development Corporation. It stated that broadband access to the internet is critical to the continued economic vitality and growth of the County. That many of the residences and businesses within the County lack access to affordable and reliable broadband internet service. That the operation and expansion of the wireless broadband service may be most effectively developed and operated by a local development corporation which will contract with Allegany County to manage the telecommunications infrastructure and undertake all legal and business arrangements necessary for delivering wireless broadband internet service.
At the time of the creation Allegany County had secured grant funding that would allow it to develop and provide wireless broadband service to unserved and underserved regions in the County. This initial grant was through the ConnectNY Program in which New York State invested $800,000 and Allegany County matched the grant with $200,000. This program worked to put radio equipment on the 911 tower system and other towers in the County. Three frequencies were utilized to serve the last mile connections for homes and businesses. CONXX located in Cumberland MD and Scranton PA were the design and build contractor for this project.
